Sorn is a small village in East Ayrshire standing on the north bank of the River Ayr. It can be found just over three miles east of Mauchline and under two north-east of Catrine.
Little was here before Sorn Castle was built in 1409. Today the castle stands in its 8,000 acre estate to the north-west of the village and serves as an exclusive use venue. A parish church was built in 1692 to serve a community that at the time was known as Dalgain or Dalgayne.
There was little development in or around Sorn through most of the 1800s, though several small coal mines were operating to the south-east by the end of the century. The Sorn drift mine was dug not far from Sorn Castle in 1947. This closed in 1983. (Continues below image...)

In times past, the village was home to a number of commercial enterprises, including the Sorn Inn and a corner shop, off license and coffee shop. By the time of our last visit in 2026, the inn had been converted into holiday apartments, the cafe/shop had closed, and what appeared to be an old garage at the western end of the village was no longer operating. Despite this, the village has a real charm. There is still a primary school, a village hall with a picnic area and the bowling club appears to be thriving.
On the south side of Main Street is a stone cottage that carries evidence of what at first sight appears to be another former commercial venture. A small sign proclaiming “Robert T. Baird” is set above a shop window with a metal grille over it. Inside is a collection of TVs that seem to date back a good few decades. This turns out to be more an exhibition space for a personal collection than anything that ever operated as a shop.
