  • Hermaness NNR Overlooking Muckle Flugga – Britain’s most northerly point – Hermaness National Nature Reserve (NNR) is a dramatic cliff-top haven for thousands of seabirds. Birds that breed here include fulmars, gulls, shags, gannets, puffins and kittiwakes.

  • Mousa RSPB Reserve This island is most famous for its 2,000 year-old broch - the best-preserved in the world - where many of Mousa's 6,000 pairs of storm petrels nest. On the island of Mousa.
  • Ness of Burgi A defensive stone-built blockhouse, probably of Iron Age date, with some features resembling a broch. At the S-Easternmost point of Scatness, South Shetland off the A970.
  • Noss NNR Take a boat trip to this island where thousands of seabirds and wonderful scenery guarantee a memorable experience. Take the car ferry from Lerwick to Bressay, then follow the Noss signs for three miles to the car park.

  • Staneydale Temple A Neolithic hall, heel-shaped externally, and containing a large oval chamber. Around it are ruins of houses, walls and cairns of the same period. 3m SW of Bixter on West mainland off the A971.
  • Sumburgh Head RSPB Reserve The cliffs around Sumburgh Head are on the southernmost tip of Mainland Shetland and attract thousands of summer breeding seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, shags and fulmars. Nearest town: Lerwick.
