Short Walks on Skye by Joanna Young

Book Cover

This book describes 40 short walks on Skye. The walks are all exceptionally short, and each can be done in less than 40 minutes one way; while some can be done in five minutes. But all of them take you to places of wonder and beauty, to beaches, rivers, woodlands, churchyards, ruined castles and forts. And while the walks may be short, the destinations and locations are superbly chosen and you may still want to stay for hours.

The forty walks are spread across Skye, mainly hugging the coastline. A few are on the neighbouring island of Raasay, and one is on the mainland. A key map is provided at the start of the book, locating each walk, and the walks themselves each come with a sketch map, and information about starting point, the walk itself and points of interest.

Joanna Young wrote this book after family holidays in Skye revealed the need for short walks suitable for all ages, fitness levels and motivation as well as all weather conditions. Most walking guides to Skye tackle longer and more adventurous walks, with the result that this nice little book fills a real gap, providing great walks for occasions when the available time doesn't run to more strenuous excursions.
