15 Short Walks in Perthshire North by Nicole Bukaty

Pitlochry, Aberfeldy and Dunkeld

Book Cover

"15 Short Walks in Perthshire North - Pitlochry, Aberfeldy and Dunkeld" by Nicole Bukaty is a wonderful little book for anyone visiting or staying in Highland Perthshire: or, for that matter, anyone wanting to take a break and stretch their legs on the long drive north from Perth on the A9.

A fold out map at the front of the book gives a good idea of the range of walks on offer, and they do nicely cluster around Pitlochry, Aberfeldy and Dunkeld, two of which are on the A9. Two other walks, The Falls of Bruar, and Glent Tilt and Blair Castle, are also close to the A9 and ideal for those wishing to get away from the crowds at the House of Bruar. The remaining walks in the book are near the east ends of Loch Tay, Loch Rannoch and Loch Tummel. Each walk comes with a section of facts and a nice introduction, followed by a route description, colour illustrations and a section of Ordnance Survey mapping large enough to provide all the navigational guidance you will need to do the walk.

The opening page of the books sets out its aims: "In this book you will find a selection of easy or moderate walks suitable for almost anyone, including casual walkers and families with children, or for when you only have a short time to fill. The routes have been carefully chosen to allow you to explore the area and its attractions. Most routes are circular or out-and-back... Although there may be some climbs, there is no challenging terrain, but do bear in mind that conditions can sometimes be wet or muddy underfoot."

You get a good sense of the book from the publisher's description: "Would you like to explore the best of the Pitlochry, Aberfeldy and Dunkeld? This guidebook covers 15 of the best short walks in the area (all under three hours), including the Falls of Bruar, Birnam Hill, the Birks of Aberfeldy, Drummond Hill and Blair Castle. Cicerone’s Short Walks guidebooks contain everything you need to get outdoors and discover the best of an area. The routes are perfect if you’re new to walking or looking for something you can enjoy with the whole family. Let the adventures begin!"
