Screen Sizes: Our 2009 update at the end of 2008 significantly increased the number of 1280x1024 wallpapers available on Undiscovered Scotland, while a residual collection of 800x600 wallpapers was removed. This reflects the rising popularity of our 1280x1024 wallpapers and the diminishing interest in our 800x600 wallpapers. And this, in turn, reflects the screen sizes people are using. Our latest figures show 39% of our visitors use a screen definition of 1024x768 (a figure which is slowly diminishing over time); while 14% of visitors use a screen definition of 1280x1024 and 20% of visitors use a definition of 1280x800. The figure for 800x600 users has shrunk to 4%, and the balance is spread across a number of other screen definitions. Consultation: This raises the question of what we should do in future. 1024x768 looks like it is going to be a popular screen definition for some time, so we will probably continue to make our wallpapers available in that size. Ideally we would like to make as many as possible available in one further size. At present the size we use is 1280x1024 because a year or so back that seemed the most popular. But it has already been overtaken by 1280x800. And making a wallpaper available at 1280x1024 means cropping the original image. We would be very pleased to hear your views on what larger size we ought to make available when the time comes for the 2010 update at the end of 2009. Should we stick with 1280x1024, on the basis of feedback that this also works well with 1280x800? Would it be better to make wallpapers available in uncropped 1365x1024, with a view to their being more usable by users of both 1280x1024 and 1280x800 screen definitions? Or is some other solution preferable in your view? Please e-mail us with your views. |
