VisitScotland Accessibility Categories

Scotland's National Tourist Board, VisitScotland, operate a comprehensive accessibility assessment scheme for those with mobility impairment which produces three categories of graded access, usually referred to as "STB Categories".

This can be applied to visitor attractions and to accommodation providers. Where a visitor attraction has identifiably different component parts (for example, the attraction itself, shop, café, toilets, etc.), awards are made to highlight the different access levels for each part. Where an accommodation provider holds an award, at least one bedroom is accessible to the level given.

STB Accessibility Categories:
Category 1 Wheelchair access without assistance
Category 2 Wheelchair access with assistance
Category 3 Access for those with mobility impairment

VisitScotland set out their detailed criteria for these categories on their website. They are cumulative, so the criteria for Category 2 are additional to those set out for Category 3; and the criteria for Category 1 are additional to those set out for Categories 2 and 3. Their criteria can be found here: Category 3, Category 2, Category 1.
