SCOTTISH TOURIST TREAT: With apt Celtic
bravado, Undiscovered Scotland proclaims itself to be the ultimate online
guide. And it certainly appears comprehensive: clicking on the interactive map
leads you to helpfully illustrated, in-depth features seemingly about
Scotland’s every nook - perfect for learning the history of Haroldswick
(named after King Harald of Norway, whose fleet landed at this northerly tip of
the Shetland Islands in AD875) or simply finding a wee dram in Edinburgh, and
not too surprisingly, there are many choices. The site’s primary function,
however, is to signpost local businesses and accommodation, but features -
including colourful biographies of historical figures such as Rob Roy
MacGregor, a guide to distilling malt whisky and recipes for delicacies such as
Rumbledethumps (Scottish bubble and squeak, made from potato, cabbage and
cheese) - ensure wider appeal. Staring at the green tartan background for too
long may induce something resembling a Laphroaig hangover, but, with a resource
like this, Scotland won’t remain undiscovered for long. |
