The romance and intoxication of Skye is encapsulated in Greshornish's secluded and historic loch-side setting with its sweeping views across the lawn towards the Trotternish peninsula. Greshornish House, protected by its 10 acres of gardens and grounds between Portree and Dunvegan Castle, offers deep peace and seclusion.
The house dates from 1740 and was the home of Kenneth Macleod, a wealthy and influential Victorian landlord who built the first hospital on Skye and did much to improve the comfort of his cotters. There is a description of Greshornish House in A Summer in Skye by Alexander Smith (1860) and it also appears in Skye - the Island and its Legends by Otta Swire.
Now a comfortable Country House Hotel with nine distinctive and individual bedrooms, Greshornish House also provides its guests and non residents with excellent food. Sea-food lunches a summer speciality (12.30pm - 2pm) and afternoon teas are now served in the new Conservatory. In the evening the recently refurbished Dining Room (converted from the Victorian kitchen) comes into its own with candle lit dinners.
It is an idyllic choice for an intimate family wedding or other special occasion, and an ideal base from which to explore the whole island. You can find us about 1 hour from the Skye Bridge. Take the A850 Dunvegan Road from Portree. One mile after Edinbane turn right at Greshornish sign - and watch out for the sheep on the road!
