One of three close together pubs on the north side of the High Street section of the Royal Mile (with The Mitre and Clever Dick's) the Royal Mile has an attractive frontage squeezed tightly between Bishop's Close to the west and North Gray's Close to the east.

The interior is necessarily as narrow as the frontage, but it extends back past comfortable seating areas to the bar and the tables beyond. Meanwhile, tables on the pavement of High Street provide seating for those who prefer simply to watch the world go by: in one of the world's nicest cities.
