![]() The Malt Shovel Across Cockburn Street |
The Malt Shovel is an attractive green-painted pub that curves around the lower end of Cockburn Street as it climbs from the New Town to the Old.

Internally you find a series of levels, ascending from the bar at one end through a number of areas of seating. This is not a particularly old pub or a genuinely traditional pub: but it is friendly and comfortable, and well placed for the railway station and all of Edinburgh's amenities.

The Malt Shovel always has four well kept real ales available, and their stock of single malt Scotch whiskies is extensive. Food is available from lunch until into the evening, and comprises traditional pub fayre. Live music is staged a couple of nights each week. The pub is popular with local residents and with office workers (the back door of the Council headquarters is opposite) and the Cockburn Street location close to Waverley Station means it is well placed to catch passing traffic and visitors to the city.
