Bow Bar
Bow Bar

Located on Victoria Street (also known as West Bow), one of the most spectacular streets in the Old Town, the Bow Bar hides unassumingly behind its narrow frontage and plain glass windows. It would be very easy simply to walk past it without noticing, which would be a shame for this is one of Edinburgh's best pubs.

Inside is a lovely pub, selling a superb range of real ales. The walls of the single room are decorated with old advertising mirrors, while the bar itself is superb. A line of dispensers on the counter for the ales, with a magnificent traditional gantry on the wall behind for the malts.

The dispensers used for its real ales by the Bow Bar are Scottish tall founts, which at any one time serve a range of guest ales from across the UK. Scottish tall founts are a uniquely Scottish means of serving cask-conditioned beer using air pressure driven by a water engine. Most Scottish pubs have replaced their Scottish tall founts with English handpumps and the Bow Bar is now one of only a handful of Scottish pubs serving in the traditional way: another is the Abbotsford.

The gantry on the wall behind the bar is another traditional feature of Scottish pubs. Originally these gantries housed casks of whisky. It is now more usual to find them housing whisky in bottles, and the Bow Bar's gantry is home to its remarkable collection of 150 single malt Scotch whiskies.

It comes as something of a surprise to find that the fixtures and fittings that add so much to the enjoyment of drinking in the Bow Bar are relatively recent additions, inserted since the 1980s having been reclaimed as other pubs were "modernised".
