 Black

Located at the west end of Grassmarket, the Black Bull has an attractive exterior that
leads you in to the long bar that goes back a surprising distance.

T&J Bernard used to be an Edinburgh brewery whose name has been adopted for a chain
of pubs by Scottish & Newcastle. As a result the Black Bull is one of a number of Edinburgh
pubs that retain signage and decorative touches that date back to before its demise. Like other
Grassmarket pubs it can become very busy in the evenings, especially at weekends, when it features
on the stag and hen party round.

 Interior from the Door |
The Black Bull is one of Edinburgh's oldest pubs. Today its frontage is rather smaller
than in the past: a postcard from 1909 shows the entire building carrying in large lettering
between first and second floor levels: Black Bull Lodgings for Travellers and
Working Men. Modern planners would probably turn it down on aesthetic grounds!
